TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan asserted that he will not tolerate the city’s state civil apparatus or ASN who are involved in corruption. Anies said he had raised their income to meet their financial needs.
"There is no tolerance at all for anyone who is involved in this practice especially in Jakarta because their needs are fulfilled. No more reason to commit corrupt practices,” Anies said in an online discussion regarding graft cases committed by regional heads on Thursday, April 9, 2021.
Higher government wages are hoped to eliminate corrupt practices. “We give them enough [salary] because if it is insufficient, it will be the biggest path [for corruption],” said Anies.
The governor argued there are two other motives for corruption; greed and a poor system. To deal with the illegal practice motivated by greed, Anies opined there is no other way by severe punishment and sanctions. “Because greed has no end.”
Facing corruption due to a poor system, meanwhile, requires systemic reform in the internal government. The Jakarta administration has applied digitalization in all levels of governmental activities to make it transparent and easy to monitor.
Even though all the needs have been met, prevention efforts and systems must also be strengthened and so the challenges remain. If corruption acts occur in the city administration, Anies Baswedan said there will be no tolerance. “The person will be immediately dismissed and replaced and we will take a legal process,” he said.
