TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government planned to disburse financial assistance to victims of flash floods in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) for the construction of houses. The compensation will be around Rp10-50 million depending on the damage severity.
“The BNPB (National Disaster Mitigation Agency) as assigned by the president will build houses that are severely, moderately, or slightly damaged with a budget of Rp50 million, Rp25 million, and Rp10 million respectively,” said the BNPB Head Doni Monardo in an online press conference on Tuesday, April 6, 2021.
Flash floods, landslides, and strong winds struck 11 regencies and cities in East Nusa Tenggara last Sunday. The hardest-hit areas include districts of East Flores, Alor, and Lembata, as well as Kupang City, Central Malacca District, Ngada, East Sumba, Rote Ndao, Sabu Raijua, South Central Timor, and Ende.
According to BNPB data as of 9:00 p.m. yesterday, 84 people died, 15 were injured, and 71 people were missing. Hundreds of houses were also destroyed and swept away by the flood.
While waiting for the disbursement of the compensation, the government will provide funds for victims to find shelter in order to prevent crowds in evacuation centers.
“We will try to help evacuees to rent homes by providing funds to each family after the local government submits a proposal to BNPB,” said Doni.
