TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Transportation Ministry will soon issue a regulation on the public transportation and travel requirements as a follow-up to the central government’s ban on Eid homecoming or mudik this year. The ministry’s spokesperson Adita Irawati said that the policy is being finalized..
“It will be announced in the next few days,” said Adita when contacted on Monday, April 5, 2021.
Adita stopped short of explaining the details of the regulation, saying that complete information will be conveyed at the same time as the policy issuance.
The policy will support the government's decision to bar the mass exodus from May 6 to 17, 2021. The government hoped that the ban could prevent a spike in Covid-19 cases.
The ban was decided in the meeting of the Covid-19 Handling and National Economic Recovery Committee on March 23, 2021, and a coordination meeting at the ministerial level on Eid al-Fitr preparation on March 26, 2021.
Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said that the finalization of the transportation control regulation has been carried out since Sunday, April 4.
However, people are advised not to travel out of town except for urgency. “We assert that this ban on Eid homecoming is final. So we ask the public not to go mudik this year to prevent an unwanted situation from happening, the surge in Covid-19 cases,” said Budi Karya.
