TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Director of state-run oil firm PT Pertamina, Nicke Widyawati, issued a public apology for the massive blaze at the Balongan oil refinery in West Java.
“Representing Pertamina, I would like to offer my deep concern over this incident and also apologize to the public,” said Nicke in a live broadcast on Monday, March 29, 2021.
Nicke asked for prayers from all parties so that the company can immediately handle the incident. She explained that her side had carried out a normal shutdown to control the oil flow in a bid to prevent the fire from spreading to other areas.
The cause of the fire remained unknown until now. Nicke added that authorities are investigating the matter, while the company is focusing on dealing with the emergency situation on the site.
“We synergize with the regional police and government,” she said. The company has deployed the fire agency to extinguish the flame and cool down the surrounding area.
Nicke appealed to residents to remain calm and stay far from the fire site. With the help of the police and the military, Pertamina closed the road access to the site. “We have evacuated people and provided evacuation posts. Some residents have returned home.”
Nicke went on to say that five victims are still hospitalized. “All victims have been medically treated and there is no fatality from this incident,” she said.
