Professor Argues Sinovac Vaccine Effective for Another 2 Years

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The head of the third clinical phase research team of the Sinovac vaccine, Kusnandi Rusmil, said Monday the Chinese-made vaccine was expected to still be effective for up to two years. The Padjadjaran University's faculty of medicine professor said a new formula would need to be introduced after the vaccine passed its third or fourth year.

“Based on my calculations and taking into accounts the virus variant, this vaccine will still be effective for the next year or two,” said the professor on Monday, March 21.

Kusnandi made sure that the Sinovac vaccine was currently still effective against the new mutated B.1.1.7 strain from the United Kingdom.

According to him, the efficacy of the vaccine is backed by the request from the World Health Organization (WHO) to extend the Sinovac clinical trials for another 6 months.

The professor predicted that a "booster" would likely be needed to extend one’s immune system against the coronavirus as those who had been vaccinated would not have a lifetime immunity.
