TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police's antiterror squad Densus 88 arrested 22 alleged terrorists on March 19 that the police claimed were linked to the Jaringan Islamiyah (JI) terrorist cell.
National Police spokesperson Brig. Gen. Rusdi Hartono explained two suspects were arrested in Jakarta, six in West Sumatra, 14 in North Sumatra, and that Densus 88 operations were still afoot.
Rusdi said the previous 22 suspected terrorists arrested in East Java were presently detained at a special detention facility in Cikeas, West Java, while the additional 22 were still grilled at the respective regions.
Jaringan Islamiyah—widely known to have ties with international terrorist group Al Qaeda—has allegedly committed a number of terror acts such as the 2002 Bali bombings that tragically killed 202 people, 88 of them were Australian citizens on vacation.
Jaringan Islamiyah was officially declared a banned organization by the court in 2008. Indonesian authorities continue to further eradicate the existence of this terror group with the support of Australia and the United States.
