TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecasted the rainy season in Indonesia would end in May. BMKG's deputy for climatology, Herizal, said rainfall intensity in the country this year leapt by 40 percent due to the La Nina weather phenomenon.
The agency explained on its website the peak of the rainy season affected by the La Nina would affect each region differently in 2021, with Kalimantan and Maluku in January and Sulawesi in January-April.
Herizal predicted 96 percent of regions in Indonesia would see rain in 2021 with varied degrees of intensity. Only 10-20 percent of Indonesian regions will expect low-intensity rain such as in Bali and Nusa Tenggara.
Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Nusa Tenggara and a number of regions in Sulawesi will likely experience medium-intensity rain activities measuring 50-100 mm.
Meanwhile, possible heavy rain (over 150 mm of rain) is forecasted to fall over Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Papua.
