Pertamina Issues Clarification on Major Clash in Jakarta's Pancoran

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A Pertamina representative denied that it was attempting to evict residents of Pancoran Dalam II in South Jakarta, claiming that it was only 'restoring assets' in the area of Pancoran. Pertamina's statement came after a clash broke between members of the mass-organization Pemuda Pancasila and residents of Pancoran Dalam II.
“The asset is legally owned by Pertamina based on the verdict by the Supreme Court,” said Senior Vice President Corporate Communication & Investor Relation Pertamina, Agus Suprijanto, on Friday, March 19.
Agus explained that the state-owned energy giant plans to use the asset for national interests despite not elaborating what the interests were.
He believed the company has disseminated its plan to the residents and local figures through a dissemination program done by its subsidiary Perusahaan Training & Consultant (PTC) prior to the clash.
The clash broke out on Wednesday afternoon on March 17, and lasted until the evening. Witness testimony strongly suggested that the clash was sparked by Pertamina’s plan to evict the residents of Pancoran Dalam II. Dozens of people, from both sides, were injured in this clash.
