TEMPO.CO, JakartaFinance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati hoped the implementation of import duties on digital products could create a level playing field in both businesses of digital and physical goods.

“As a minister, I have received many complaints from those who run a business on traditional, conventional, physical products,” said Sri in a virtual International Conference on Digital Transformation on Tuesday, March 16.

She said imported movies, video games, songs, and other digital products were also required to have the same treatment as imported books or other imported physical goods.

Besides, the implementation of import duties on digital goods through electronic transmission aimed at preventing potential losses from state revenues.

That said, Sri added, the government must be able to adapt to new trends and set the same regulations. She acknowledged that the customs administration in digital transformation will be one of the most challenging tasks.

Sri also acknowledged that the global logistics system has also changed, as well as the supply chain and the operation of multinational companies, in line with the digital economy.

“So the government, including the Customs and Excise Directorate General, must be capable of carrying out its duties. We need to balance between maintaining the economy, facilitating, and supporting the industry and economic activities, as well as collecting revenue,” said Sri Mulyani.
