MPR: No Proposal for Amendment to UUD 1945 on Third Presidential Term

TEMPO.CO, JakartaPeople's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Deputy Speaker Hidayat Nur Wahid confirmed there was no agenda to propose an amendment to the 1945 Constitution (UUD 1945) to allow a third presidential term.

“To date, there is no legal and formal proposal from the palace, individuals, or members of the MPR submitted to the MPR leaders on the amendment to the 1945 Constitution to extend the presidential term,” said Hidayat in a written statement on Monday, March 15.

The PKS politician said most MPR leaders from various factions had announced there would be no amendment regarding the presidential term.

According to him, this is the MPR’s commitment to maintaining the mandate of the reform by adhering to Article 7 of the 1945 Constitution that the President and the Vice President shall hold office for a term of five years and may subsequently be re-elected to the same office for only another term.

“This is the collective attitude of the MPR to preserve the reform mandate so that undemocratic political condition will not recur due to prolonged presidential terms such as during the New Order era,” Hidayat explained.

According to him, the plan on the amendment to the 1945 Constitution to extend the presidential term so that Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono or SBY and Joko Widodo or Jokowi could vie again in the 2024 Presidential Election must be criticized and rejected as it is not in line with the 1945 Constitution and the reform mandate.
