MPR Denies Wanting to Amend Constitution to Extend Presidential Term

15 March 2021 07:09 WIB

Chairman of the GM FKPPI Central Advisory Council for the 2019-2024 Period as well as the Deputy Chair of the Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly, Dr. Ahmad Basarah

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) deputy speaker Ahmad Basarah - and member of PDIP which is the Party of the current president - claims that the Party does indeed intend to present change in the 1945 Constitution (UUD) but is unrelated to extend the president’s term of office.

Basarah’s statement comes after politician and  prominent critic of the current government Amien Rais alleged the government of taking major steps to request an MPR special session to amend several Articles within the Constitution that would enable a president and vice president’s term of office.

Upon directly denying Rais’ allegations Basarah stated “[It isn;t] to extend the president’s term to three terms because that is not a necessity for our nation currently.”

Ahmad Basarah said the PDIP yearns for a limited session to give authority back to the MPR upon establishing the GBHN or State Policy Guidelines that is intended to create a national development continuity for every change in leadership.

The MPR deputy speaker persists that his Party has never thought about taking major political steps to change the constitution just to extend the leadership of the president. “The current one is ideal enough and does not need any changes,” he said.
