TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta provincial government is planning to expand its inner-city intermediate treatment facility (ITF), which is meant to reduce its dependency on the major landfill in the city’s satellite city of Bekasi, Bantargebang, which is notoriously known for its trash mountains.
Jakarta intends to build four ITFs whose construction will be handed to two of its regional-owned enterprises (BUMD): PT Jakarta Propertindo (Jakpro) and Perumda Sarana Jaya under the coordination of the Jakarta Environment Agency (Dinas LH)
The agency's acting head, Syaripudin, said on Friday, March 12 the ITFs were hoped to reduce the trashes and change them into renewable energy sources via technology-based waste management system.
PT Jakpro is tasked to build the intermediate treatment facilities in Sunter and the Western service areas and the latter will be designed to process up to two thousand tons of trash daily with 80 percent efficiency.
The ITFs planned in the eastern and southern areas are hoped to reduce waste by 70-90 percent, especially considering that trash dropped at the Bantargebang landfill continues to grow on a daily basis from 5,665 tons in 2014 to 7,424 tons in 2020.
Meanwhile, the Sunter ITF, which acts as the main headquarters, is hoped to reduce 2,200 tons of trash and general waste and create potential electricity up to 35 megawatts.
“This project is hoped to be one of the many efforts of utilizing trash into electricity that will be beneficial for Jakarta residents,” said Syaripudin.
