TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) asked the public to be aware of extreme weather during the transition period from the rainy season to the dry season.
The agency’s Deputy for Meteorology Guswanto explained weather conditions relatively change faster during the transition period. For example, it can be sunny in the morning and during the day, but changes suddenly to high-intensity rain in a short duration in the afternoon.
People are appealed to increase vigilance over several extreme weather phenomena during the period, such as extreme rainfall with lightning and strong winds. “Also tornadoes, waterspouts, and hail,” Guswanto added in a statement, Thursday, March 11.
A waterspout refers to a rotating column of water and sprays like a tornado occurring over a large surface of water such as a sea or lake.
Most parts of Indonesian regions will enter the transition period at the end of March albeit the La Nina phenomenon has the potential to last until May 2021. However, it will be weak to normal intensity, the BMKG forecasted.
Guswanto further advised the public to stay vigilant of the impacts of extreme weather. “Which can cause floods, landslides, fallen trees, and strong winds during the transition period this year,” he said.
