TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - General (ret.) Moeldoko was appointed as the chairman of the Democrat Party for 2021-2025 in the party's extraordinary congress (KLB) held today, March 5, in Sibolangit, Deli Serdang, North Sumatra.
The congress participants proposed the Presidential Chief of Staff and former speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Marzuki Alie to take the party leadership. Based on quick vote, Moeldoko garnered higher support than Marzuki.
“We declare Moeldoko as the general chairman of the Democrat Party from 2021 to 2026,” said the meeting chair, Jhoni Allen Marbun.
The extraordinary congress also determined that the General Chairman of the Democrat Party of Congress V, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), was dismissed. “We decided that first, the 2020-2021 Central Executive Board headed by AHY is dismissed,” Jhoni added.
Moeldoko has received the mandate of the Extraordinary Congress of the Democrat Party. “I respect the decision. I accept being the general chairman,” he said via a phone call at the congress.
Prior to the KLB, AHY announced there was an attempt to oust him from the leadership of the Democrat Party that allegedly involved Moeldoko.
Jhoni Allen Marbun and other senior party cadres have earlier been dismissed from the party over what AHY called an “attempted coup.”
