TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati warned the potential for heavy rainfalls over the greater Jakarta area (Jabodetabek), Banten, and Java Island from this evening, Wednesday, Feb 24, untill the following day.
It also announced a possible flood alert due to the extreme weather. “The effects of the extreme weather will not only happen at Jabodetabek, but will nearly be prevalent in other areas,” said Dwi in a virtual press conference on February 24.
Officially, BMKG issued a flood warning on February 25, for north, south, west, east, and central Jakarta areas,as well as the satellite cities such as Tangerang, Depok, and Bekasi, due to intense and prolonged rain.
The agency’s forecast is based on the potential cyclone that has formed in the southern area of Nusa Tenggara, which can become a full-on tropical cyclone dubbed the ‘98S cyclone seed.’
BMKG predicts this potential cyclone may move to East Java’s southern area or 625 kilometers of East Java’s coastline.
