Minor to Severe Side Effects after Covid-19 Vaccination; Authority Explains

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Commission on Post-Immunization Accidents (Komnas KIPI) Chairman Hindra Irawan Satari revealed that there are only five adverse events per 10,000 injections that occurred following the Covid-19 vaccination. 

The reactions were mostly mild such as nausea, difficulty breathing, tingling, limb weakness, or elevated heart rates, outlined Hindra in an online press conference in Jakarta, Monday, February 22.

According to him, the side effects would disappear without the need for treatment within one up to two days. “In general, the post-immunization event is experienced because the person is anxious [about getting vaccinated],” he said.

However, Hindra did not deny the occurrence of severe reactions from the Covid-19 vaccine yet the number was low at 42 per one million cases, such as nausea, vomiting, fainting, and abnormal movements such as paralysis.

Vaccinated people having serious side effects will receive medical examinations such as X-rays, CT scans, and others. Hindra said all of them showed normal results. “A day to two days later, the participants’ health return to normal.”

Hindra further outlined that 64 percent of vaccinated people experienced immunization stress-related responses as they were anxious about getting the vaccine. He ensured that was not due to the vaccine ingredients.

Based on reports and studies from 22 Indonesian provinces, Komnas KIPI concluded that the side effects from the Covid-19 vaccination in Indonesia were the same as in other countries. “So we recommend that the Covid-19 vaccine is safe and can be used for the national vaccination program,” Hindra said.
