TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Social Affairs Minister Tri Rismaharini or Risma said the government would soon build two low-cost rental apartments or locally known Rusunawa for former scavengers and homeless people.
The construction would be carried out by the Ministry of Public Works and \Housing (PUPR) in two locations, namely Pasar Rebo, Jakarta, and Bekasi, West Java.
"The PUPR Ministry has agreed and will build two Rusunawa blocks in Bekasi and Jakarta," Risma said during the launching of the creation center on Thursday, February 18, 2021.
The former mayor of Surabaya explained that the government was determined to provide proper houses for poor people, particularly former scavengers and homeless people. The apartment would each have 100 units.
"I have interviewed scavengers, they averagely earn IDR 30,000 per day for two people, so that their average monthly earning is around IDR450,000 per person. There's no way they can rent a house in Jakarta that costs a minimum of IDR400,000," Risma said.
Apart from the Rusunawa, Risma also introduced the social rehabilitation center dubbed ATENSI programs for former scavengers and homeless people, such as culinary training, hydroponic farming, hen farming, handicrafts, and recycling training of non-organic waste.
