TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Supreme Court (MA) Chief Justice Syarifuddin said that the Covid-19 pandemic has brought its own positives for Indonesia’s justice institutions and gave credit to the swift establishments of electronic-based case trials.
“The Covid-19 pandemic has pushed for a quicker establishment of regulations on electronic-based criminal trials,” said Syarifuddin in the Supreme Court annual report on February 17.
The Chief Justice refers to the judicial reform blueprint 2010-2035 that sees the migration away from conventional justice system to electronic justice system which was scheduled to commence throughout 2021 to 2035.
“We must be grateful that the electronic justice system was realized one year earlier from what was mandated by the judicial reform blueprint,” he said.
Law enforcers were wary about the fate of criminal trials as the Covid-19 pandemic struck Indonesia early in 2020 as at the time there were no legal protections for trials that were conducted electronically. Only as September 2020 arrived, a law was passed and acted as the long-awaited legal protection.
