Govt Passes More Job Creation Law Derivatives Deemed as 'Economic Vaccines'

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government has officially passed 49 implementing regulations from the Job Creation Law, which is widely known as the UU Cipta Kerja, on Tuesday, February 16. The regulations consist of 45 government regulations and four presidential regulations.

“The drafting of the Job Creation Law’s implementing regulations is hoped to soon have an effect on the national economic recovery and also be a momentum to assert the year of Indonesia’s resurrection,” the Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly wrote in a statement on February 16.

Prior to drafting 49 of the regulations, the government had already introduced Government Regulation (PP) No.73/2020 on the Indonesia Investment Authority and government regulation No.74/2020 on the authority’s initial capital. In total the government has introduced 49 PP and five presidential regulations that are the Job Creation’s derivatives.

Yasonna Laoly likened these derivatives as vaccines for the weakening economy amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. “We are hopeful the Job Creation Law and its  implementing regulations would be a ‘vaccine’ to recover the national economy that weakened for the past year caused by the pandemic,” said Yassona.

The Job Creation Law’s initial introduction by the government and, house of representatives that passed it, attracted mass-protests nationwide as many believe it gives too much leeway for investors and sets aside laws that protect the environment and slashes the rights of labor workers. Many have challenged the passing of the law at the Constitutional Court and is an ongoing process.
