3 Chinese New Year Activities Turn Digital

12 February 2021 08:05 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThere are many ways you can celebrate and enjoy the 2021 ‘imlek’, or Chinese new year despite being amidst a seemingly never-ending pandemic and the health protocols that follow it, but don’t let the social restrictions let your mood down as these are the three Imlek traditions you can still practice right now but also remain safe from the Covid-19 pandemic:

  1. Digital Angpao

The giving of angpao - or red envelopes filled with a certain amount of money - remains to be the Lunar New Year tradition that will likely not go away. This is usually given by people who are older to younger people. However, due to the Covid-19 health restrictions families may not be able to visit each other but giving angpao can still be done digitally through the many digital wallet platforms.

  1. Gifting foods

Sending neighbors or relatives food during Imlek can help enliven your new year’s celebration from the comfort and safety of your own home. There are a plethora of food options on online platforms to choose from and send to your loved ones.

  1. Virtual Family Meeting

We may have taken technological developments for granted and realize that we can still gather as a whole family online. There are many online meeting apps that can help you gather your families such as Google’s Meet and Hangout or Zoom. Don’t forget to dress properly to truly appreciate the Chinese New Year!
