Pulau Air Station in Padang Reopens after Being Closed for 44 Years

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Today, February 10, marked a new history for Pulau Air Station in Padang, West Sumatra. The oldest station in Ranah Minang, or the land of Minangkabau, has been reopened after being closed for 44 years since 1977.

“The station is operating again today. The Minangkabau Express train which originally serves the Minangkabau International Airport (BIM)-Padang route is extended until Pulau Air,” said the head of public relations of the PT KAI West Sumatra, Ujang Rusen Permana, in Padang, Wednesday.

According to Ujang, the reactivation of the station brings strategic value as it will ease tourists landing at Minangkabau International Airport to access some of the leading tourist destinations of Padang City, such as Kota Tua or the Old City, Marina at Muaro Harbor, and Padang Beach which are located near the station.

Several star hotels are also available not far near the station. “Tourists wishing to go surfing in Mentawai can also find it easier to access ships at the Muaro Port,” Ujang added.

He further explained that there would be six departures a day of Minangkabau Express trains through Pulau Air Station until the Minangkabau International Airport. The tariff is set at Rp10,000 for the last destination of BIM or only Rp5,000 for destinations before the airport.
