TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Deputy Governor Ahmad Riza Patria explained the reasons for the high number of daily Covid-19 cases in the capital city. According to him, one of the factors was the tedium life experienced by the people who have struggled with the pandemic for almost a year.
“However, if we observe the facts in the field, Alhamdulillah (Praise to God) Jakarta people are disciplined enough to wear face masks and maintain a safe distance,” said Riza at the City Hall on Tuesday night, February 9.
Besides, Jakarta as the capital is the center of public interaction, trade, and government. Many residents of other regions visited or stayed here. “The potential for high interaction causes a higher potential for virus transmission,” Riza underlined.
The city administration thus continued to increase the testing capacity, which had 13 times exceeded the standard set by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Jakarta also contributed 43.4 percent of the national coronavirus tests, he informed. The high daily number of positive cases was also the impact of the long holidays of Christmas 2020 and New Year 2021.
As previously reported, Jakarta recorded 3,000 new daily Covid-19 cases on average. On Sunday, February 7, the number even reached 4,213 cases. Thus, Governor Anies Baswedan was determined to prolong the Large-Scale Social Restrictions or PSBB for two weeks until February 22.
