TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Agriculture Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo on Monday claimed that working in the agriculture sector had been favored by people during the COVID-19 pandemic, which he said was proven by the 2.23 percent workers’ growth.
“This is evident in the number of workers in the agriculture sector that increased by 2.23 percent compared to the previous year,” said Syahrul in a House of Representatives (DPR) hearing today.
He said the agriculture sector managed to attract 38.2 million people or 29.76 percent of Indonesia's total working population of 128.4 million.
In the House hearing, the ministry was focusing on developing the agriculture sector in 2021, which would be centered more on realizing the food supply independence for the population, improving agricultural production’s competitiveness, and realizing farmers’ welfare.
Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo said the latest records from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) showed that the agriculture GDP’s growth during the IV quarter was up by 2.59 percent. This growth happened as Indonesia’s economy was suffering from a -2.07 percent economic contraction due to the pandemic.
