TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly confirmed that he would issue a decree on the revocation of Indonesian citizenship of the elected Regent of Sabu Raijua, Orient Riwu Kore.
“We will officially issue a decree to revoke the citizenship to the person concerned,” Yasonna told Tempo on Monday, February 8.
Yasonna stated that based on the Citizenship Law, Indonesia does not recognize dual citizenship. As Orient became a United States citizen, he had lost his status as an Indonesian national, the minister added.
To process the decree, Yasonna explained that representatives of the embassy or consulate-general would report to the Ministry of Law and Human Rights that there are Indonesian nationals who have received foreign citizenship. “We are in the process of revoking his citizenship,” he said.
Previously reported, the Election Supervisory Board or Bawaslu Sabu Raijua, East Nusa Tenggara, stated the elected regent Orient P Riwu Kore still had the U.S. nationality status. The issue was confirmed by the United States Embassy.
Meanwhile, the population database of the Ministry of Home Affairs recorded that Orient was registered as an Indonesian citizen. The Director-General of Population and Civil Registration, Zudan Arif Fakrulloh, also confirmed that Orient Riwu Kore once had a U.S. passport without giving up Indonesian citizenship status.
