TEMPO.CO, Kupang - Sabu Raijua regent-elect Orient Riwu Kore has spoken up about issues regarding his citizenship, clarifying that he is an Indonesian national (WNI). The clarification was made after his meeting with the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Police Chief, Insp. Gen. Lotharia Latif, on Friday, February 5, 2021.
“I am an Indonesian citizen. I have no dual citizenship,” Orient said before reporters.
According to him, he wished to vie in the regency head election as he followed the mandate of his parents. “I am running for the Sabu Regional Head Election (Pilkada) because it is the mandate of my parents,” he said.
As for the United States citizenship status, Orient explained that someone had taken care of the issue.
Lotharia Latif said that the Regional Police along with the Regency Government and the Regional Election Commission (KPU) held a meeting with Orient Riwu Kore. “I’m still obliged to secure regent candidates,” he said.
Lotharia added that his side respected the ongoing legal process while waiting for the government's decision on this matter. However, he was tight-lipped when asked about the citizenship issue of the Sabu Raijua regent-elect, Orient Riwu Kore, as the matter was in the hands of the government.
Lotharia said the police had investigated the case in collaboration with the National Police and related institutions to see any possible violations or crimes. “We are still waiting for legal proceedings related to his (Orient) citizenship status,” he said.
