FPI Accused of Supporting JAD, ISIS; Ex Sec-Gen Munarman Clarifies

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Secretary-General of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) Munarman denied the accusation that he and FPI supported the Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD) and ISIS.
The accusation was widely addressed to Munarman and the disbanded organization after video footage of suspected terrorists confessing the matter went viral on social media.
The video showed that a suspected terrorist, Ahmad Aulia, who was arrested in Makassar claimed to be a member of the FPI. He also revealed that Munarman witnessed him pledging allegiance to JAD, an ISIS-linked militant group.
“We have a different manhaj,” said Munarman to Tempo on Thursday, February 4. Manhaj means the methodology used in understanding the teachings of Islam.
When asked about Ahmad Aulia’s claim, Munarman was reluctant to explain. “I don’t know him,” he shortly said.
Munarman explained that as stated by former secretary of South Sulawesi FPI, Agus Salim Syam, the 19 suspected terrorists were not active members of the FPI. They had indeed joined the organization but had never been registered as members, he underlined.
