TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) announced that the Sabu Raijua Regent-elect, Orient P Riwu Kore, is in-fact a United States citizen after the agency obtained confirmation from the United States embassy in Jakarta.
The Sabu Raijua Bawaslu chairperson, Yugi Tagi Huma, said to Antara News on February 2 that the embassy in Jakarta “confirmed and acknowledged that the person in question is still a US citizen,” he said.
This confirmation comes after Bawaslu acted upon its suspicion on the citizenship of the elected regent and contacted the Kupang immigration. They claim to have notified the General Elections Commission (KPU).
Yugi said that he had initially reminded the Sabu Raijua KPU to investigate the allegation that Orient is not an Indonesian citizen. “We had also sent a warning before he was inaugurated. We asked them to not rush the inauguration but eventually they named him regent-elect,” said Yugi.
