The More Corrupt a Country is, the Less Spent on Healthcare, Says TII

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transparency International Indonesia (TII) argues that the more corrupt a country is, the fewer state funds are allocated for its healthcare services. This was stated in Thursday’s TII online conference linking the level of corruption and the ability of a country to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic.
In contrast, TII believes healthcare budget allocation will be sufficient as a country is free from corruption.
“Countries with high-level corruption would tend to spend less on healthcare, which is a contrast to countries that are relatively cleaner,” said TII research manager Wawan Heru Suyatmiko in the press conference on January 28.
The conclusion comes after the watchdog analyzed data from 180 countries from 2012-2017 and found that corruption has certainly shifted public funds away from essentials such as healthcare.
Wawan said corruption has also backtracked democracy during the Covid-19 pandemic. Countries with high corruption rates would respond to the global crisis in less-democratic ways.
