Staycation and Road Trip Predicted to Be Travel Trends for 2021

27 January 2021 09:04 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Covid-19 pandemic has changed the traveling lifestyle. The online travel and booking company Traveloka predicted that the travel trend for 2021 will include staycation.

Based on Traveloka's data on travel activities, 38 percent of its users chose to go for a staycation, 34 percent chose to enjoy culinary tours, and the other 25 percent wished to take a domestic flight.

Besides staycation, road trips would also become this year’s travel trend. The availability of vaccines against the coronavirus disease would likely boost the popularity of domestic tourist destinations in 2021.

Even amid the pandemic, Traveloka noted that people’s enthusiasm for traveling was still high. According to its internal survey from May 28 until August 16 last year, 67 respondents chose vacation as the most wanted activity post the pandemic.

Meanwhile, 26 percent of users claimed they had taken a vacation and 72 percent of them went for a road trip throughout 2020.

Nearly half of users planned to travel by plane. “So Traveloka predicted that flights will again become the main transportation for traveling,” said Co-Founder of Traveloka, Albert, in a press conference on 2021 travel trends, Tuesday, Jan. 26.

The three most popular destinations during 2020 for staycations and road trips were Jakarta, Bandung, and Surabaya, followed by Malang, Yogyakarta, Solo, Semarang, and Bali.
