103 Schools Damaged Due to West Sulawesi Earthquake

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The 6.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Mamuju and Majene in West Sulawesi Province on Friday, Jan. 15, destroyed 103 schools, according to the government data. In detail, 39 buildings were severely devastated, 19 buildings were moderately damaged, and 45 buildings were slightly damaged.
The powerful quake affected educational facilities in four districts. In Mamuju, 18 schools suffered severe damage, 12 with moderate damage, and 10 suffered slight damage.
As many as 19 school buildings in Majene were also severely damaged, six schools suffered moderate damage, and 21 schools were slightly damaged.
In Poliwali Mandar district, meanwhile, the quake heavily destroyed two school buildings, moderately ruined one school, and slightly ruined seven other buildings. Mamasa District also saw minor damage in seven school buildings.
In the time of emergency, the Education and Culture Ministry, the Religious Affairs Ministry, the National Disaster Resilience Education (SPAB) Secretariat, and education institutions joined hands to operate Education Posts led by West Sulawesi Education Agency Head.
“We provide technical support such as managing Education Posts, having coordination and emergency education policies, collecting data, and facilitating emergency schools, as well as providing psychosocial support [for the earthquake victims],” said the Education Ministry spokesman Hendarman.
