W. Sulawesi Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 81, BNPB Reports

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) on Sunday, January 17, reported additional deaths caused by the devastating earthquake in West Sulawesi. The agency’s operations center reported a total of 81 deaths on late sunday evening. 

“There were 70 who died in Mamuju and 11 more in Majane,” BNPB spokesperson Raditya Jati explained in the latest report on Monday.

Raditya explains that disaster mitigation, enacted by joint police, military, search and rescue personnel, continues to be done in the most affected regions such as Majene, Mamuju, and Polewali Mandar.

The financial losses are predicted to soar high as 1,150 houses and 15 schools were damaged by the earthquake. Disaster aid worth millions of rupiah has been dispersed to provinces in West Sulawesi that were largely affected by the natural disaster.
