Boeing Partakes in Identification of Sriwijaya Air Plane Debris

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Committee for Transportation Safety (KNKT) confirmed that the Boeing Company is participating in identifying the debris of the crashed Sriwijaya Air flight SJ182.

"Our aviation fellows are keen to know the cause of the plane crash," KNKT investigator Yunus Ardanto stated at the Jakarta International Container Terminal's pier 2 in Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, on Saturday.

On the eighth day of the search operation on Saturday, an eight-member investigating team, including four foreign investigators, with one from Boeing, examined the debris of the Sriwijaya Air flight SJ182.

The team arrived at the JICT pier at 1:15 p.m. local time in the company of KNKT officers. They later inspected the debris for 20 minutes.

Ardanto revealed that they visited the JICT pier to identify the debris as part of the precautionary measures to avoid a similar accident from recurring in future.

"By unearthing the cause of the plane crash, we can recommend to all relevant parties to take precautionary steps to avoid similar incidents in future," he stated.

KNKT has several partners from countries including Boeing GE, Transport Safety Investigation Bureau (TSIB) of Singapore, and the US National Transport Safety Board (NTSB) of the US.

The Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737-500, bearing registration number PK-CLC, lost contact on January 9, 2020, at 2:40 p.m. Western Indonesia time (WIB) shortly after take-off and crashed between Lancang Island and Laki Island, Thousand Islands, Jakarta. The aircraft has taken off from Jakarta and was en route to Pontianak.
