South Kalimantan: Floods Force 112,709 People to Flee Home

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Floods that have inundated several parts of South Kalimantan province in the past few days have claimed five lives and compelled 112,709 people to leave their homes and shift to safety.

The floods have submerged a total of 27,111 homes in the province, officials informed.

Chief of the operation control center at the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), Bambang Surya Putra, said in Jakarta on Saturday that the agency has extended ready-for-use funds of Rp1 billion for South Kalimantan province, and Rp500 million each for the districts of Banjar, Tapin, Tabalong, Balangan, and Hulu Sungai Tengah and the cities of Banjar Baru and Tanah Laut.

BNPB has also set up five evacuee tents and prepared 100 beds, one 10-meter-long folding boat, and 100 packs of fast food, food supplements, and masks for refugees.

The floods have affected the districts of Banjar, Tapin, Tabalong, Balangan, and Hulu Sungai Tengah, and the cities of Tanah Laut and Banjar Baru.

The floods have hit Banjar district the hardest, submerging 14,791 homes and forcing 51,362 people to take refuge.

In Tapin district, the floods have inundated 112 homes and forced 1,777 people to shift to higher ground.

The floods have forced 622 people in Banjar Baru city to leave home. A total of 296 homes have been flooded in the city. In Tabalong, the floods have submerged 92 homes, forcing 180 people to take refuge.

In Balangan district, the floods have affected 11,816 people and inundated 3,571 homes. In Hulu Sungai Tengah district, the floods have forced 11,200 residents to take refuge, affected 64,400 people, and claimed five lives.

The floods in Tanah Laut city have compelled 27,024 people to take refuge and submerged 8,249 homes.
