Landslide in Sumedang; Rescuers Hunt for 24 Missing People

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The joint search and rescue (SAR) team continued searching for 24 missing people allegedly buried in the landslide in Cihanjuang Village, Cimanggung District, Sumedang Regency, West Java.
“The search team is divided into 3 sectors,” said Bandung SAR Agency Head Deden Ridwansyah today, Jan. 12.
The landslide occurred on Saturday, Jan. 9, claiming at least 15 lives. 25 people affected by the incident survived, while the other 24 people went missing. A total of 1,108 personnel deployed for the evacuation process using 2 units of heavy equipment and other supporting equipment.
Previously, the Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center (PVMBG) stated that one of the causes of the landslide in Sumedang was the weathering of several types of rocks.
“High-intensity rain triggers ground movements,” said the PVMBG’s Head of Geology, Kasbani, in his statement on Sunday, Jan. 10.
