TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) held an edict meeting regarding the halal status of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac on Friday, Jan. 8, 2021. The vaccine candidate was declared halal.

“Regarding the halal aspect, after a long discussion, the Edict Commission agreed that the COVID-19 vaccine produced by Chinese firm Sinovac is pure and halal,” said the council’s Edict Commission chairman, Asrorun Niam Sholeh, in today’s press conference.

“But regarding the use permit, it is closely related to the security aspect decided by the BPOM (Food and Drug Monitoring Agency),” Niam added.

Therefore, he concluded that the issuance of the halal edict for the Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine would await the Emergency Use Authorization by the BPOM.

“So the full edict will be delivered after BPOM issues an emergency use authorization or EUA,” Niam said.
