TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Private Hospital Association (ARSSI) secretary-general, Iing Ichsan Hanafi, confirmed that the occupancy rates of COVID-19 referral hospitals in Jakarta had entered a critical phase as isolation beds and ICU rooms were nearly full at 95 percent.
“Only 5 percent of isolation beds and ICU rooms for patients are available for the last two days. This has been a warning to be more vigilant,” said Iing to Tempo on Friday, Jan. 8, 2021.
According to him, Jakarta has 101 referral hospitals for patients with the coronavirus disease with some 7,300 isolation beds and 958 ICU beds.
In the short term, he advised the government to increase hospital capacity given the significant surge in the number of patients in recent days. “Even new referral hospitals will likely be fully occupied once open. [Because of] the rapid addition to patients’ numbers.”
What is more alarming, Iing went on, is that new patients coming to the hospitals and receiving treatments are those with severe symptoms.
This condition also occurred in Jakarta’s neighboring regions, viz. Depok, Bogor, Tangerang, and Bekasi. “[The COVID-19 pandemic situation] in Jabodetabek is quite serious. There should be more ICU and isolation rooms,” Iing said.
