TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The management head of Tegal Alur public cemetery, Wawin Wahyudi, reported a hike in the number of burials under the Covid-19 protocols.
“The surge has occurred since last week,” said Wawin to Tempo on Tuesday, Dec. 29. “Even on Monday, we saw the highest daily record as we buried 52 bodies in accordance with the protocols.”
In the past week, the gravediggers buried some 40-50 bodies under the protocol in Tegal Alur cemetery. The number was far higher than the first spike since Pondok Ranggon public cemetery no longer accepted funerals due to running out of space.
Pondok Ranggon cemetery had no longer received the funeral of Covid-19 victims since November 13, 2020. Thus Tegal Alur must accommodate all bodies. Previously, the public cemetery buried 25-35 bodies.
“Before the grave space in Pondok Ranggon cemetery is full, we only receive a dozen bodies or 28 bodies at the highest at that time,” said Wawin.
