Expert Claims Fisheries Economy Experience Recession

18 December 2020 00:37 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Marine economy researcher Suhana, said that the condition of Indonesia's maritime and fishery sector is not well. Suhana added that economically, the maritime and fishery sector had experienced a recession in the third quarter of 2020.

Quoting data from the Central Statistics Agency, Suhana said that the marine economy had contracted within the last two quarters. In the second quarter, Indonesia's marine economy contracted by 0.36 percent and 1.03 percent in the third quarter.

"This is the worst condition in the history of the marine economy. This needs to be our collective attention," Suhana said during the Ngobrol Tempo event on Thursday, December 17, 2020.

During the 1997-1998 crises period, according to Suhana, fisheries become one of the successful and resilient sectors. However, in the last year, Suhana claimed that the fisheries sector had experienced adverse conditions.

Such conditions, Suhana said, is also experienced by fishermen. According to Suhana, the bad condition experienced by fishermen is apparent with their decreasing trade value. This means that fishermen are making less compared to their expenses.

"This means larger pegs than the pole. They're slumped because the economy is experiencing a recession, this must affect fishermen and fish cultivation," Suhana said.

Nevertheless, Suhana said that Indonesian export value is increasing in general despite lower export volume. For example, a live grouper export to Hong Kong decreases by 50 to 60 percent in the third quarter.

"We were relieved by shrimps exported to Amerika, which experienced an increase. In the third quarter, our export grows by almost nine percent. But it is globally. On the other hand, our imports also increase," Suhana said.
