TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investments Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan announced on Thursday, December 17, 2020, that US electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla will make a visit to Indonesia early next year to discuss possibilities of an investment deal.
"Tesla has expressed strong interests and they will pay a visit in January of 2021," said Luhut during the launching event of the battery-based electric vehicles (KBLBB) on Thursday, December 17, 2020.
Luhut argued that Indonesia has a major potential to be a hub for battery-based electric vehicle production based on the number of potential investors that have expressed their interest.
Luhut also believed that this can be a solution to suppress the country's trade balance deficit due to the high import rate of fuel (BBM). Luhut added that hand Indonesia has an overflowing supply for electric energy, which he claimed to be untapped potential.
Earlier in September, Luhut claimed that he was contacted by Tesla that had expressed interest to build a lithium battery factory in Indonesia due to the country’s massive nickel ore reserves.
