JCI Climbs as President Jokowi Announces Free Vaccines

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The IDX Composite Index in Jakarta, or the Jakarta Composite Index (JCI), climbed by nearly 2 percent to 6098.64 in session two of today's trade, December 16. The gain came following an announcement by Indonesian President Joko Widodo or Jokowi that the Covid-19 vaccine would be distributed for free.
Bloomberg reported the index moving up from morning to noon. At 14:00 Jakarta time, the JCI stood in the safe territory after gaining 96 bps to 6104.59.
As of the time of this publication, the IDX recorded 28.58 billion shares transacted for a value of Rp16.2 trillion. Foreign investors made a net purchase total of Rp221.93 billion.
President Jokowi announced that Covid-19 will be given for free to the public. He had instructed his ministries as well as provincial governments to prioritize the vaccination program in their 2021 budgets.
He also instructed the Finance Minister to prioritize and reallocate budgets from other posts [to ensure] that the vaccines are free and widely available, so that "there is no reason for the people not to get vaccines."
