4 E-Commerce Set to Collect Duties on Imported Goods

15 December 2020 09:04 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian government through the Finance Ministry planned to instantly collect duties on imported goods at US$3 per shipment in an adjustment to the Finance Ministerial regulation No. 199/2019 concerning Provisions on Customs, Excise, and Taxes of Consignment Goods.

The collection will be carried out by using a system through digital marketplaces. The Director of Customs Fadjar Donny said four e-commerce firms have joined the system. However, he stopped short of mentioning the names.

“Of the four marketplaces, 95 percent control imports of consignments. Everything is being processed, and the system is being equalized,” said Fadjar as quoted from Bisnis.com on Tuesday, Dec. 15.

Fadjar explained that the preparation of the new regulation followed the mandates of the Director-General of Customs and Excise Heru Pambudi and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati. The scheme has also been recognized by the World Customs Organization.

After imposing a policy on the equal level of playing fields on tax collection, the government expected a better system, he added.

Hopefully, Fadjar went on, e-commerce as the bridge for consumers and sellers of imported goods could provide the data. Thus when a sale occurs, the transaction is detected through the system and so the government collects taxes online.
