TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The former Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti tweeted on Monday calling for President Joko Widodo, or Jokowi, to take notice about major fishing vessels from Pantura that operate with seine nets (cantrang) over Natuna which she argues is ruining the livelihood of local fishermen.
“Pak President @jokowi I plead to you to protect their livelihoods. Stop the permits for Pantura cantrang fishing ships from entering Natuna,” Susi tweeted from her personal account @susipudjiastuti on December 7.
The Susi Air air carrier owner believes that the president would only need to call the state official having the authority to stop the operations of these migrating cantrang fishing vessels.
Susi Pudjiastuti asserts that the large-scale fishing ships should be stopped before Natuna’s marine life gets ruined. “Let the Java and southeast Sumatra seas that are damaged, as [the cantrang vessels operations] over these areas have gone for so long and cannot be controlled anymore,” she tweeted.
Previously reported, a number of Natuna fishermen have complained about ‘cantrang’ fishing vessels from Pantura operating over their region which is feared to damage Natuna’s coral reef after the maritime and fisheries ministry permitted its operations to counteract the problem of illegal fishing by foreign fishing boats.
