Police: Aceh Safe amid 44th Anniversary of Separatist Group GAM

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police (Polri) on Friday announced the situation in Aceh remained under control and secure during the 44th anniversary of separatist group Free Aceh Movement (GAM) on Friday, December 4, 2020.
National Police (Polri) spokesman Brig. Gen. Awi Setiyono announced Friday police personnel and the Indonesian military had continued to keep a close eye on developments in the special autonomous region.
“However, based on information we received, there were people who celebrated GAM’s 44th anniversary and voiced a number of demands,” he said at the National Police headquarters in South Jakarta.
The demands, said Awi, were sporadically announced at the Baitul Rahman Mosque, which among them included the display of GAM symbols in the Aceh governance, in line with the Helsinki agreement.
A number of sources reported that the 44th GAM anniversary saw the separatist flag being flown at the mosque for a brief 15 minutes.
