Task Force: Surge in Covid-19 Mainly Caused by Indiscipline in Health Protocol

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s number of Covid-19 cases that keeps increasing in the past week was mainly due to the lack of public discipline in implementing the health protocols, revealed the mitigation task force.

“The main factor contributing to the surge in active cases is the indiscipline of the public in complying with the health protocols of 3M, and many people also gather in various forms of activities,” said the task force spokesman Wiku Adisasmito in a virtual press conference at Graha BNPB Jakarta, Tuesday, Dec. 1.

According to the task force data, the number of new weekly cases on Nov. 22-29 reached 36,600, rose by 19.8 percent from previously 30,555 on Nov. 15-22. Two provinces recorded a significant hike, namely Jakarta and Central Java.

“The task force asks regional heads to evaluate the implementation of the health protocol by the government and the public, as well as the policy enforcement carried out by the regional task force. The increase in cases can only be prevented by being disciplined to implement the health protocol,” Wiku underlined.

As of Tuesday, Dec. 1, Indonesia has 543,975 positive cases of Covid-19, with the highest ever single-day cases reaching 5,092. Of the total tally, 54,879 people made recoveries and 17,081 people died. The country also still has 71,286 suspected patients.
