500 Shoes Line before DPR Building in Silent Protest over RUU PKS

25 November 2020 17:02 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Five hundred pairs of shoes lined up in front of the House of Representatives (DPR) Building, Senayan, Central Jakarta, as part of a demonstration demanding the ratification of the sexual violence eradication bill (RUU PKS), on Wednesday morning, November 25, 2020. A piece of paper noting the demands was placed in each row of the shoes.

“This activity is a silent demonstration by placing 500 shoes as a campaign to stop sexual violence,” as read in the live broadcast message via YouTube channel of The Body Shop Indonesia on Wednesday, November 25, 2020.

The silent protest was initiated by The Body Shop Indonesia along with counseling foundation Yayasan Pulih and feminist publication Magdalene. The shoes were donated via fundraising that will last until December 10, 2020.

The rally was staged from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Several protesters in the area made an oration, asking for the public to sign the petition urging the government to immediately pass the PKS bill on https://t.co/thk3ZNwSNL.

"#SAHKANRUUPKS (#PASSRUUPKS) so everyone is protected! No more time to wait," The Body Shop Indonesia tweeted on its account @thebodyshopindo.

The unique demonstration held by lining hundreds of shoes became public limelight on social media. They appreciated the committee for organizing a demonstration without causing a crowd amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
