BMKG: Mentawai, Padang Hit Again by Earthquake

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 jolted Siberut Island, Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra.
The quake which occurred at the early hours of Friday, November 20, or 01:10 Western Indonesian Time (WIB) originated at a depth of 24 kilometers.
Its epicenter was at 1.45 degrees South Latitude (LS) and 99.69 degrees East Longitude (BT) or at sea, 68 kilometers southeast of Siberut Island. The tremor was felt in several areas around the island up to III MMI level in Padang and weaker in Pasaman, Tanah Datar until Agam.
There was no potential tsunami following the quake, yet BMKG appealed the public to stay alert and keep updated about case developments from official sources.
On November 17 and 18, quakes rocked the Mentawai Islands reaching Padang. The first occurred at sea, 112 kilometers southwest of Tua Pejat, North Sipora Island. At that time, it was measured 6 magnitudes with a depth of 10 kilometers. The shaking was felt up to IV MMI level although it was classified as a shallow quake.
The BMKG confirmed that the second earthquake was sourced at sea, 57 kilometers southwest of Pesisir Selatan measuring 5.3 magnitudes from a depth of 11 kilometers. The tremor was felt at III MMI level up to IV MMI level in Tua Pejat and Painan.
