Jokowi Asserts No Perpu to Revoke Job Creation Law

17 November 2020 09:36 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaPresident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo asserted that he would not issue a regulation in lieu of law or Perpu to revoke the newly-passed Job Creation Law despite many rejections.

“This law is a government initiative, we prepared it for months until it was discussed in the DPR (House of Representatives) for eight months. There are pros and cons until it is approved [by the House],” said the President in a TV show on Monday night, November 17, 2020.

According to him, a rule surely cannot please all parties. The government, he said, would try to accommodate aspirations that had not been taken in through the derivative regulations of the omnibus law, namely government regulations and presidential regulations.

Until last week, the Indonesian Students Executive Boards' Alliance (BEM SI) held street protests urging the President to issue Perpu. Meanwhile, labor unions and civil society coalitions were challenging the law and filed a judicial review to the Constitutional Court.

The Confederation of Indonesian Workers Unions (KSPI) also asked the government to stop the deliberation of the omnibus law until there is a court’s ruling.

Instead of drafting derivative regulations, KSPI suggested the government revise articles considered to be detrimental to workers given that after the Job Creation bill was signed by Jokowi on Monday, November 2, 2020, there were still many mistakes.
