TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The House of Representatives (DPR) Legislation Body (Baleg) chairman Supratman Andi Agtas argued that polemic over the alcoholic drink prohibition bill is common. Public protest, he said, would be taken into considerations by the Baleg members before proposing the bill as its initiative.
“It (the polemic) is common, it is dynamic in society. It (the protest) will surely be considered by the DPR before proposing it as an initiative. There are pros and cons,” Supratman told Tempo on Friday, November 13, 2020.
However, Supratman opined that the title of the bill was not appropriate. Promoters should have used another more proper nomenclature, replacing the term prohibition with regulation or control.
“This is about the nomenclature that sparks perceptions,” said the Gerindra politician.
The bill is now in the deliberation process in the House Baleg. If it is agreed, the alcohol prohibition bill will be the House’s initiative and may be listed in the 2021 National Legislation Program (Prolegnas).
The House Deputy Speaker, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, said that dynamics about the alcoholic drink prohibition bill in the community must not be addressed exaggeratedly. He ensured that the House will review whether the bill discussion can be resumed or stopped.
