Political Observer Analyzes Anies Baswedan - Rizieq Shihab Meeting

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Political observer from Al Azhar Indonesia University (UAI), Ujang Komarudin, on Friday said the visit of Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan to Rizieq Shihab’s house on Tuesday, November 10, will eventually have a political effect on the governor.
“Anies’ arrival there showed his respect for habib Rizieq and also [signals his need] for political support from habib Rizieq,” wrote Ujang Komarudin in his text message to Tempo on November 13.
He views that Rizieq Shihab as an influential figure that contributed to Anies Baswedan’s electoral win in the 2017 Gubernatorial Election. Especially with the 212 Movement he initiated that made the incumbent governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama lose his position in the office.
“Habib Rizieq’s political influence towards Anies is huge. So it is natural that Anies Baswedan would immediately pay a visit to the habib,” said the political observer.
According to Komarudin, the return of the Islam Defenders Front (FPI) leader to Indonesia from Saudi Arabia, will present a different dynamic in Indonesia’s politics. He believes Rizieq Shihab will strengthen the non-parliament opposition movement.
