Indonesia Confiscates 80 Foreign Illegal Fishing Boats in 2020

12 November 2020 11:00 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry announced that it had apprehended 80 illegal fishing vessels for the past year in 2020 which consists of 59 foreign boats and 19 others flying the Indonesian flag.

The Ministry’s fisheries and maritime resources surveillance directorate general noted that the confiscated foreign fishing vessels mainly came from Vietnam with 27 fishing boats with fishing boats from the Philippines, Malaysia, and Taiwan following behind.

These confiscations and arrests were made after the ministry mobilized 24-hour enforcement units that are posted along Indonesia’s oceans. A ministry representative recalled a pattern used by foreign-flag illegal fishing boats that employ Indonesian crews in stealing fish over Indonesian waters.

The latest saw the maritime affairs and fisheries ministry confiscate two illegal fishing vessels from Malaysia at the Malacca Strait, which the ministry’s director-general considered as a proud moment where ministry officials exemplified the spirit of Indonesian past heroes.
